    How to Calculate GST in India: Complete Guide 2026

    2026-05-15 5 min GST, Tax, India, Finance

    What is GST?

    Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It has replaced multiple cascading taxes levied by central and state governments.

    GST Components

    GST is divided into three components:

    • CGST (Central GST) - Collected by the Central Government
    • SGST (State GST) - Collected by the State Government
    • IGST (Integrated GST) - Collected for inter-state transactions

    How to Calculate GST

    GST Exclusive Calculation

    When GST is added to the base price:

    GST Amount = Base Price × (GST Rate / 100)

    Total = Base Price + GST Amount

    GST Inclusive Calculation

    When GST is included in the total price:

    Base Price = Total / (1 + GST Rate / 100)

    GST Amount = Total - Base Price

    GST Slabs in India

    • 0% - Essential items like food grains, fresh vegetables
    • 5% - Household necessities like sugar, tea, coffee
    • 12% - Computers, processed food
    • 18% - Standard rate for most goods and services
    • 28% - Luxury items like cars, tobacco

    Example Calculation

    For a product priced at ₹10,000 with 18% GST excl.:

    GST = ₹10,000 × 18% = ₹1,800
    Total = ₹10,000 + ₹1,800 = ₹11,800

    CGST = SGST = ₹1,800 / 2 = ₹900 each
